New year, new instance, similar intro: I'm a mostly working in and in particular. Much of my previous work was on issues on moral status, welfare, and evolutionary biology. I lead AI and data ethics initiatives at Northeastern's Ethics Institute. You can find me at johnbasl.net.

Outside of philosophy, I collect hobbies and obsess over coffee.

I had a fun conversation with Adam William for the Water Cooler Talk podcast about AI, large language models, and the like. It is now released. Adam does a really great job of making things conversational by orienting discussion around a couple of news stories. He also surprised me by opening the conversation with some questions about coffee that I was not prepared for! If you are interested, you can find the episode here: linktr.ee/watercoolertalkpod

Now accepting applications for #IDEAS2023 for undergraduate students!

Spend 14 expenses-paid days in #Boston (#Northeastern) or #SanDiego (#UCSanDiego) learning about the ethics and politics of "AI" & #datascience.

As we did last year, we especially welcome students from historically underrepresented and marginalized communities, including those from a wide range of educational institutions and disciplines (not just CS or Philosophy)!

I am really, really bad at posting on Mastodon. But I will get better, I promise, because Twitter is an ever-widening hellhole. In the meantime, here's a PDRA job we are hiring for at Edinburgh as part of our new UKRI AHRC Responsible AI Ecosystem programme! Please boost or toot or retoot or whatever we do here. If you or someone you know wants to work at Edinburgh with me (+ Ewa Luger + Ada Lovelace Institute), click below! Applications close Jan 18, funded to Oct 2025. elxw.fa.em3.oraclecloud.com/hc

Based on some scheduling issues and requests, we've extended the deadline for our summer training program for graduate students: cssh.northeastern.edu/ethics/s

Please spread the word to interested parties!

Since it's graduate admissions season again, I thought I'd leave a little advice I give anyone going through this.
