Finally, a good quiet moment to write my #introduction:
I’m Marlene, a literary and cultural studies scholar from Germany, currently based in London and interested in all kinds of #art, #literature and #science.
Even though as a researcher I primarily deal with literature, I love the whole wide field of #philosophy ('philosophy' in the ancient sense). Connected to this, I love lively discussions, the examination of current social and political affairs and the joy of aesthetic forms, whether they come from art or #nature. So, I’m really looking forward to sharing #ideas about all these topics here!
I love my #research, but I won't just focus on that here. Rather, I will be discussing #politics and current affairs with you. And I love learning more about literature, art and philosophy from all over the world!
What I like about #Mastodon is how international the exchange is. I’m looking forward to learning more about the views of people from all over the world and getting in touch with them. At the same time, I'm also very interested in local life. I love my hometown Cologne (#Köln), lived mostly in #Hamburg in the last few years and now I'm brand new to #London. These cities will also feature in my posts.
Oh, and I love to #dance. But that only works in real life, not on the internet.
"My kitchen is for dancing"! 😊

John Singer Sargent, El Jaleo (Spanish Dancer), 1882
El Jaleo is an example of Hispanism, the phenomenon of widespread fascination with Spanish culture throughout Europe and America in the nineteenth and early twentieth century.
Almost 12 feet (3.7 m) wide, El Jaleo is broadly painted in a nearly monochromatic palette, but for spots of red at the right and an orange at left.

There are so many undiscovered things that Londoners and Cologneers have in common... ❤️
PART I.: BOTH LOVE PUBS.
* "Drinking Kölsch in Cologne". - - - Good choice! 🤩
* "And is there anything else to do in Cologne?" - - - Yes of course, celebrating carnival!! 🥳
* "What the f**k is in Dusseldorf?! you may ask." - - - Well, I don't know. 🤷♀️
(These are all quotes from the attached article - - - and what I would answer. 😇 )

This is one of my favorite pictures. It feels like it was taken yesterday… but it was taken in a Paris public garden nearly a hundred years ago. Everything feels modern: the composition, the casualness, the daring clothes, haircuts, and accessories.
The colors are original: this is an #autochrome, using the first process for color #photography invented by the Lumière brothers in 1903.
The women are unknown, but I can't help wondering how they fared a few years later in nazi-occupied Paris.
re: #typeface & cultural habits from my periods of historical interest
At the end of the #EighteenthCentury there was a great #German debate on the virtues of Fraktur vs. Roman typefaces
Ironically, when Schiller & Goethe sought to assert their new Classical aesthetic via the periodical, Die Horen (The Graces, or Goddesses of the Seasons; 1795-97), they very deliberately chose Fraktur. One reviewer decried the "*tasteless*" printing with "Gothic monks' letters"

#Pressefreiheit https://rdl.de/beitrag/ermittlungsverfahren-nach-indymedia-linksunten-verbot-wegen-bildung-krimineller
